Tommy Castro

When: Wed., Jan. 6, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010

Born in San Jose, Tommy Castro has always cut quite a figure on both the local and national blues scenes thanks to the way he nimbly weaves soul influences into his singing and axe wielding. Having released material on imprints like Telarc, Blind Pig, and 33rd Street, Castro most recently inked a deal with Chicago's Alligator Records. On his label debut, 2009's Hard Believer, John Porter's production was a bit on the polished side, but Castro still managed to add enough grit to covers of Bob Dylan, Wilson Pickett, and Allen Toussaint to keep the material from emitting any whiff of selling out. Given how much more of a formidable presence Castro is on stage versus in the studio, expect him to be kicking the early days of 2010 square in the ass on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland). 8 & 10 p.m., $12-$20.
