Sturdy, picturesque biopic saga of The Lord of the Rings author depicts J.R.R. Tolkien (played as an adult by Nicholas Hoult) as an eccentric linguist and sketcher of notebook dragons whose schooldays in England gave way to fearful life-or-death experiences in the trenches of the WWI Battle of the Somme – when the feverish British Army officer hallucinated the gods of war while lying in a shell hole surrounded by corpses. Not much more than a well polished coffee table film, but one with a classic plot line (by screenwriters David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford), apt direction by Dome Karukoski, and grade-A scene-setting. Costarring Lily Collins and Colm Meaney.
