Todd Snider

When: Thu., Jan. 31, 8 p.m. 2008

Singer-songwriter Todd Snider has written a few mainstream country hits, including Gary Allen's "Alright Guy," but he's best known for snarky compositions like "Conservative Christian Right Wing Republican Straight White American Males" and his recent skewering of George W., "You Got Away With It." Snider sings his tunes with an almost audible wise-guy smirk, and while his songs often have laugh-out-loud lyrics, they're more ironic and sarcastic than funny. He's currently based in Nashville, but he's more rock 'n' roll than country. Even when he's appearing solo, as he will be in San Francisco, he has that rock edge that so many try to affect, but so few succeed at. His between-song rants are hilarious as standup, and often take up more of the evening than his razor-sharp observations of life's grim absurdities. Thursday, Jan. 31 at the GreatAmericanMusic Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $20
