When: April 2-18 2010

Borges once described life as reading a novel linearly, and dreams as reading at random. We may all be trapped riding the chrono-locomotive, like the prisoners in Runaway Train ("Once it starts, nothing can stop it!"), but art has always sought to transcend time and violate its ironbound schedules. In this group show, video artists Drone Dungeon (aka Hunter Longe and Dietrich Kieffel) and Kim Miskowicz shuffle and distort filmed imagery, scrambling time and narrative -- even interposing a lensed monolith between projector and screen for one film collage. LienaVayzman's photographic studies of fallen, compost-ready lemons have a perverse beauty once we master our initial urge to wish them buried deep in a cornfield. Katja Mater's "Summaries," multiple-exposure photos that superimpose complete book texts into fuzzy, linear blurs, are apt symbols for the age of digital scanning and speed reading. Time(Lapse) runs through April 18 at Krowswork (480 23rd St., Oakland). 510-229-7035 or
