Tibet in Song

Rated NR 2009

This documentary by Tibetan ethnomusicologist/ex-political prisoner Ngawang Choephel gives us a fascinating glimpse of authentic folk culture in that occupied country while disparaging the Chinese-led snuffing out of Tibetan traditions. It could have been pitched a little differently, as a less-predictable cultural investigation rather than an outright anti-Chinese piece. But then Choephel spent years in a Chinese Tibetan prison for “spying” while filming the doc, so this is his apt revenge. The performances by such folksingers as Lhamo Dolma and Sanam Tsering are worth the ticket price. (86 min.)
