Tia Carroll & Hard Work

When: Mon., March 31, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

Richmond-born blues singer Tia Carroll cut her teeth singing along with soft drink commercials and The School House Rock years before launching a '50s-style tribute band with co-workers from Granny Goose Foods. After years of singing at weddings, military bases, in people's backyards with a cordless mic and a small amplifier, or in small clubs that required her to bring a cassette tape of R&B instrumentals in her backpack, Carroll is finally getting her due. Last year, the former lead singer for R&B band E.C. Scott garnered the female blues vocalist of the year award from Bay Area Blues Society's West Coast Hall of Fame. She performs on Monday, March 31, at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland), along with her band Hard Work. 8 & 10 p.m., $10. Yoshis.com
