All Ages, Rock & Pop

When: Sun., May 25, 7 p.m. 2008

There's a certain class of metal bands with indie cred (Baroness, Torche, Big Business, the Sword, etc.), and among them, you'll find ample praise for Pelican. Which is somewhat odd since, though the Chicago instrumental band is often compared to Isis (and is on the roster of its venerable Hydra Head label), it isn't really metal. Nevertheless, the band's epic compositions -- which can be beautiful and delicate post-rock one moment, grindy and crushing the next -- make them somewhat of a musician's musician band. Considering that MTV's Headbanger's Ball just debuted its video for "Dead Between the Walls" from last year's City of Echoes, looks like Pelican's reputation may catapult into the mainstream momentarily. Pelican opens for Thrice at the Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Sunday, May 25. 7 p.m., $19.99.
