Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Rated R 115 minutes 2017

Missouri is the “Show Me” state, and British-born writer-director Martin McDonagh, alongside actors Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, and Woody Harrelson, demonstrates his command of character-driven American crime fiction with this tale of a violent small-town feud. McDormand and Rockwell tear the house down as, respectively, the vengeful mother of a raped and murdered young woman, and the nasty-tempered local police officer with a long-standing grudge against her. Same general turf as McDonagh’s In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, but he seems to be getting a real feel for the American scene. A winner. Also with John Hawkes, Samara Weaving, Caleb Landry Jones, Abbie Cornish, and Peter Dinklage (155 min., 2017, rated R)
