This Land Is Your Land

When: Sat., Sept. 20, 3 p.m. 2008

Woody Guthrie and John Steinbeck are icons who took up the call for the working classes, the environment and other traditional lefty causes -- the former with music and the latter in literature. So with spouses Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion paying homage to their forefathers, (she's Woody's granddaughter and he's Steinbeck's great-nephew), naturally enough there'll be plenty of social activism and educating going on during this star-studded tribute to John Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie and the American Spirit. Among the performers who'll be on playing and getting on their soap boxes are Sheryl Crow, The Black Keys, Cat Power, Henry Rollins doing spoken-word, the Mike Ness Band, Son Volt along with Guthrie and Irion. Along with archives and artifacts from both the Steinbeck and Guthrie archives being on display, collection bins will be placed throughout the venue and attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the show to benefit the Food Bank of Contra Costa (For more information on the Food Bank of Contra Costa, please visit www.foodbankccs.org). And a portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit the John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie family foundations, both of which are intent on preserving the manuscripts and materials of, and educating the public about, John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie. All of which will be going down at the Sleep Train Pavilion at Concord (2000 Kirker Pass Rd., Concord) on Saturday, Sept. 20. 3 p.m., $15-$86.50. LiveNation.com
