.This Just In: The Central Valley is More Conservative Than the Coasts

We wish we could recommend the San Francisco Chronicle‘s big piece on how different parts of California view Proposition 8, the proposal to ban same-sex marriage. Because the writer put a lot of work into it, riding along with supporters and opponents as they canvass in Stockton and Oakland. But sadly, it doesn’t tell you anything you don’t already know: people in the Central Valley will vote for the measure, while folks in the Bay Area will vote against it. Young people are more likely to be tolerant of gay marriage. Once in a while, you get an outlier like a few no-on-prop 8 people in Stockton. What you really get is a sense that this story started with a lot of promise (“I’m gonna get into the trenches, tell the story of a profound cultural divide as it’s lived from the ground up.”), but turned mostly cliches during the reporting. Hey, sometimes them’s the breaks.
