Meg Ryan and Annette Bening tie on the feed bag in a gutless, brainless, Chick-Flick-in-Excelsis remake of the old Clare Boothe Luce adaptation about New York females swarming around a rich woman (Ryan) whose husband is cheating on her. Where the 1939 Luce/George Cukor version treated most of its socialite characters with comic contempt, the update rewritten and directed by Diane English of TVs Murphy Brown actually seems to admire its. Why? Also hamming in the all-woman cast are Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, Bette Midler, Debra Messing, Candice Bergen, Cloris Leachman, and Debi Mazar, as Tanya the manicurist (114 min.).
