The Weeknd

When: Tue., May 8, 9 p.m. 2012

Hard to believe it's only been a year since Abel Tesfaye, much better known as the experimental R&B phenomenon The Weeknd, exploded into our collective hearts/minds/iTunes libraries, but it's true -- and it makes his career achievements all that much more impressive: three acclaimed releases, a handful of prestigious music prizes, the unchecked adulation of seemingly every music critic in the universe (including this one), the list goes on. And on. Latest case in point:  a couple weeks ago, Tesfaye, a Canadian national, also made his US live debut -- at Coachella, in one of the festival's much-sought-after final-night berths, where he's said to have drawn one of the biggest crowds of the 80,000-attendant strong festival. Luckily for us, he's following that up with an abbreviated US tour, the Bay Area stop of which will be at The Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Tuesday, May 8. By all accounts, Tesfaye's sparse, evocative, darkly moving codeine high of a musical style is perfectly suited to the dramatics of live performance, but trust us, this is the kind of thing you need to see and hear for yourself. 8 p.m., $35.
