The Way

Rated PG-13 115 minutes 2011

Simple, surprisingly moving “road trip” drama focuses on a buttoned-up California man (Martin Sheen), grieving for his estranged grown son (Emilio Estevez, Sheen’s real-life son), who decides to trek the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route from Southern France all the way to Santiago de Compostela in the northwest corner of Spain, in place of the son. Writer-producer-director Estevez, who appears in flashback “visions,” gives sad Tom Avery a merry crew of fellow peregrinos to bounce off of: Yorick van Wageningen as an overly jolly Dutchman; Deborah Kara Unger as a Canadian trying to quit smoking; and James Nesbitt as a hyper Irish writer. All four principals integrate wonderfully into Estevez’ screenplay of personal redemption, and the travelogue aspect is irresistible. An agreeable feel-gooder. (115 min.)
