The Way of All Flesh Tour 2009

When: Thu., May 21, 7:30 p.m. 2009

Of all the sub-genres of rock these days, none have been pushing the boundaries both in terms of technical skill and creating new sounds as metal. For many contemporary, forward-thinking bands, Metallica was a vital jumping-off point. But its mentees have evolved the band's once-groundbreaking elements -- the start-stop riffing, the double-bass flurries -- to insane heights. A leader of the pack is French metal band Gojira, which combines technical prowess with prog elements and crushing heaviness to deliver its eco-conscious message. The highlight was 2005's From Mars to Sirius, which punishes from beginning to end. Last year's The Way of All Flesh didn't disappoint either. The band may have raised the bar impossibly high; It's almost frightening to think where it could go from here. Gojira plays at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Thursday, May 21. 7:30 p.m., $18, $20.
