The Way Back

Rated PG-13 133 minutes 2011

Australian international director Peter Weir makes a thrilling broad-canvas-adventure companion piece to his 2003 Master and Commander with this splendidly roughhouse yarn about a determined group of prisoners who escape a Siberian Soviet gulag, circa 1940, and then travel 4,000 miles on foot, across mountains, steppes, and deserts, to freedom in India. Weir’s intrepid cast includes Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, and Saoirse Ronan, dodging blizzards, wolves, thirst, and mosquitoes en route (shot on location in Bulgaria, Morocco, and India). Takes us to wild and unforgiving places and introduces us to extraordinary people, with absolutely no irony. Screenplay by Weir and Keith R. Clarke, adapted from a novel by Slavomir Rawicz. Recommended. (133 min.)
