The Trip

Rated NR 109 minutes 2011

Watching Steve Coogan’s particular brand of deadpan loser humor has always been a challenge, but the format of this two-character road trip dilutes the Coogan-ness to a certain degree. Our man Steve (playing himself) sets out with his third- or fourth-choice friend Rob (Rob Brydon, Coogan’s foil from Tristram Shandy) for the North of England, to review the cuisine at bed-and-breakfast inns. Shades of Sideways, with the expected gibes at little piles of food on plates and cocktails with the consistency of snot, plus both actors’ seemingly endless contest of tedious movie star impersonations. Frequent Coogan handler Michael Winterbottom directs with a light, commercial touch of absurdity. He and the two actors spun it into a TV series. Unlike the case with Sideways, we’re happy to escape these guys when the movie finally ends (107 min.)
