The Tree

Rated NR 100 minutes 2010

In order for this movie to work, you’ve got to surrender yourself to actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, and specifically to the idea of her as a newly widowed Australian woman who protects herself and her three kids when the husband/father dies tragically and his spirit seems to enter into a huge Moreton Bay fig tree that overhangs their farm house. Once you accept that, director Julie Bertuccelli’s lyrical film – adapted by her from a novel by Judy Pascoe – accumulates emotional power and becomes a thoroughly satisfying family drama about the difficulty of letting go. If you don’t buy that, it’s just a story about a troublesome tree. We recommend relaxing and choosing the former. The performance of young Morgana Davies as wise daughter Simone is especially strong. Marton Csokas costars. (100 min.)
