The Sweeney

Rated R 112 minutes 2012

Not a very good movie, but informative about what’s selling in European action pics these days, as a Metro London police “flying squad” led by rough-and-tumble old-school roller Ray Winstone quibbles with bank robbers. In addition to its clichéd dialogue, it’s not very interestingly plotted. Better local color in the second half; better fisticuffs as well. Maybe you’d be better off going out into the lobby for popcorn and a soda for the first hour. Adequate support playing by Alan Ford, Paul Anderson, Ben Drew (he resembles Ryan Gosling gone to seed), and Hayley Atwell. Screenplay by director Nick Love, who helped writer John Hodge adapt Ian Kennedy Martin’s Seventies-era TV series. (112 min.)
