The Slants

When: Sat., March 22, 9 p.m. 2008

They may be booked two years in advance at Asian and anime conventions around the world, but the Slants are still newbies. Two years, in fact, is about one more than the Portland group has been together. This explains why it's playing Oakland's diveyStork Club between four appearances at Boise's Anime Oasis and three at Seattle's Sakuracon. The Slants have the distinction of being an all-Asian live dance band, which, besides being rare in the United States, is totally genius: By providing shared musical ground to anime devotees, they tap into a massive built-in fanbase. The title of the band's first record, Slanted Eyes, Slanted Hearts, makes no secret of this. Catch the Slants on Saturday, Mar. 22, at the Stork Club (2330 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) with Lurid Bliss, akai SKY, and headliner Wire Graffiti. 9 p.m., $7.
