The Secret Garden

When: Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 8 p.m. and Feb. 2-3, 2 p.m. 2008

Lamplighters Music Theatre dabbles in much more contemporary fare than its usual diet of Gilbert & Sullivan with Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon's musical adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett children's classic The Secret Garden. It's an odd take on the beloved tale of a young girl's private refuge in that it gives equal time and new subplots to the originally mysterious grownups, both alive and dead. The Willows in Concord produced the musical just last year, but the Lamplighters production is the first time since the original 1991 Broadway run that the score's been performed with its original full orchestration, which may or may not be less cloying and cluttered-sounding than the usual partially synthesized touring version. January 31 through February 3 at LesherCenter for the Arts (1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek) or 925-943-7469.
