The Sapphires

Rated PG-13 103 minutes 2012

Q: How could a screenplay about mistreated Australian Aboriginal women and the Vietnam War make a joyful evening at the movies? A: When the women are a talented, vivacious quartet of singing family members who cover American soul music, and when their showbiz tour of the war zone, circa 1968, is led by a congenial Irish goofball named Dave Lovelace (Chris O’Dowd). This corny-but-fun musical Oz songfest overflows with personality, especially when one of the Cammeragunja Songbirds (Deborah Mailman) from rural New South Wales falls in love with stoned manager Dave. The production has a definite Aboriginal tilt – director Wayne Blair and co-writer Tony Briggs are out to right some wrongs in Down Under history and to make us laugh at the same time. They succeed (103 min.).
