An ordinary Village Picture, but with a difference. Feisty, headstrong boy Ahlo (played by former street kid Sitthiphon Disamoe) lives in Laos, a place seldom glimpsed in US art houses. When he and his family are forced out of their home and move to a new village, Ahlo and his new little friend Kia (Loungnam Kaosainam), with the aid of her eccentric, James-Brown-worshipping uncle (Thep Phongam), enter the village’s annual homemade rocket competition. Laughs all around, but also a worthwhile glimpse into everyday life in a place still infested with unexploded ordinance dropped by you-know-whom. Directed by Australian Kim Mordaunt, who wrote the screenplay with writer Miro Bilbrough (96 min.).
