The Robber

Rated NR 90 minutes 2010

Stripped down and mean, this chilly piece of work by filmmaker Benjamin Heisenberg flatly depicts the career of a paroled ex-con named Johann Rettenberger (played by Andreas Lust from Revanche) who’s only interested in two things: running marathons and robbing banks, in and around his hometown of Vienna. Every time someone reaches out to him, he snaps back violently. Balancing the emotional claustrophobia is a remarkable series of chase sequences, with Rettenberger literally sprinting away from the police and going so far as to rob two banks in one morning, when the first one doesn’t pan out. Not for everyone, but anyone who enjoys the nastier uplands of film noir will appreciate the view. Screenplay by Heisenberg and Martin Priz, from Prinz’s novel. Franziska Weisz costars as the ex-girlfriend who tries to reach out to Johann as he dashes past (90 min.)
