The Rite

Rated PG-13 114 minutes 2011

Instead of going for easy shock cuts and splatter, this thoughtful (perhaps a little too thoughtful) “horror” pic follows Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), a young American Roman Catholic seminarian with a skeptical streak, on a trip to the Vatican for further studies. Mission: to resolve his crisis of faith by becoming an exorcist under the tutelage of one Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins). Writers Michael Petroni and Matt Baglio and director Mikael Håfström give every indication of taking the subject seriously and soberly, as the journey of a doubtful soul to the light. Maybe that’s what’s keeping a lid on the exorcisms Michael and the priest perform — one of which gives Hopkins the chance to whip out his Hannibal Lecter once again. Hopkins is fine as usual, but the film is bland and lukewarm by several standards. Costarring Alice Braga, Rutger Hauer, Toby Jones, and Ciarán Hinds. (107 min.)
