When: Sat., Aug. 25, 6 p.m. 2018
At a time when the trans community is under constant attack, The Red Shades offers something revolutionary and healing: a rock opera made for and by trans people. It mixes the history of San Francisco’s mid-’60s queer subculture with an element of science fiction. When teenage trans girl Ida runs away from her small town home, she ends up joining a gang of trans superheroes squatting in the Tenderloin — and discovers her own superpowers. With music inspired by rockabilly, punk, and cabaret, the rock opera, written by trans woman artist-activist Adrienne Price, draw parallels between the activism of another era and the present to offer hope in a regressive regime. The cast stars trans artists of color and has drawn large crowds everywhere from PianoFight to its headlining show at this year’s San Francisco Trans March. The upcoming show at the Starline Social Club will be one of the last times to see it in its concert version before being developed into a full-blown theatrical production — so don’t miss it.
