The Reader

Rated R 122 minutes 2008

Little does 1950s-era West German teenager Michael Berg (David Kross) realize it, but that sex-starved older woman he’s been screwing after school (Kate Winslet) is actually a former Nazi concentration camp guard responsible for the murder of hundreds. As punishment, when Berg grows up he becomes Ralph Fiennes. Heavens to Himmler! Defend us from guilt-ridden potboilers like Bernhard Schlink’s novel, adapted by David Hare and directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliott), neither of whom can do anything other than embalm it. Winslet acts up a repressed storm as the secretive Hanna, but in vain (123 min.).
