The Raven

Rated R 111 minutes 2012

Fails to fully catch the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe, but it’s better than the majority of films his name has been attached to. A mad serial killer is terrorizing 1849 Baltimore by imitating the gruesome murders in Poe’s work, and it’s up to the dissipated author himself (John Cusack) to solve the mystery. Cusack isn’t quite as melancholic and brooding as we would imagine Poe, but he has the look, and Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare’s dialogue suits him as he cadges drinks and examines road kill. Director James McTeigue, late of V for Vendetta, can’t quite resist pushing the Sherlock Holmes button. Still, the pet raccoon is a nice touch. Also with Brendan Gleeson, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans (110 min.)
