The Railway Man

Rated R 108 minutes 2014

Old-fashioned, sorrowful WWII drama shows an even grimmer side of the Bridge on the River Kwai story, as a former British army officer (Colin Firth), racked by nightmares from his cruel treatment as a Japanese POW in Thailand, finally tries to deal with his experience 35 years later, with the help of his wife (Nicole Kidman). Plods a bit in the middle, but Firth, Kidman, and Hiroyuki Sanada (as a guilty Japanese officer) turn in honest, emotional performances. Kidman and Firth’s “falling in love at first sight” scene on a train is particularly charming. Eric Lomax’s true story is based on his book, adapted by Frank Cottrell Boyce and Andy Paterson, and directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (116 min.).
