The Promotion

Rated R 85 minutes 2008

If postal workers can go postal, why don’t grocery workers ever go “grocery”? That’s the unspoken question in writer-director Steve Conrad’s bright, observant comedy -- dare we say social satire –- about two assistant managers (Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly) competing for the manager’s position at a Chicago supermarket. The two guys are dumb as donuts, but Scott, Reilly, their supporting cast, filmmaker Conrad’s dialogue, and his comic pacing are sharp, witty, and to the point. Sort of a Dilbert riff, only lower on the food chain. Fine characterizing by Fred Armisen, Gil Bellows, and an underutilized Lili Taylor (86 min.).
