The Promise

Rated PG-13 134 minutes 2017

Pretty much a standard “against the background of” drama, the background in this case being the horrendous 1914 Armenian Genocide, in which the Ottoman Turks slaughtered some 1.5 million ethnic Armenians at the outbreak of World War 1. While that is going on (in graphic detail), an idealistic Armenian-Turkish medical student (Oscar Isaac) falls in love with an Armenian-French nurse (Charlotte Le Bon) behind the back of her American newspaper reporter boyfriend (Christian Bale), and they are inevitably drawn into the atrocities. Better to focus on the history, tragic as it is. Direction is by Terry George, who knows from sectarian strife (Hotel Rwanda, In the Name of the Father). Useful but rather flat, despite the vigorous strife (132 min., 2016, rated PG-13) (K.V.)
