The Prince and Michael Experience

When: Sat., Feb. 4, 8 p.m. 2012

If you had to pick two consummate pop stars -- not just of the Eighties, but of all time -- there would really be no contest. Michael Jackson is of course the most obvious, and Prince would be a close second. Not only were they known as incredible singers and songwriters, capable of mixing rock, pop, R&B, and blues to create music that could draw even the most intransigent shoegazer to the dancefloor; they were also fashion icons, perfecters of street-style breakdance moves (which they executed with balletic grace), unabashed gender-benders, multi-instrumentalists, and balladeers who could win any person's heart with a single lyric: When Jackson sang the first line of "Human Nature" to an adoring audience in Bucharest, midway through his 1992 "Dangerous" Tour, women had to be carried out on stretchers. This weekend the two will face off -- figuratively speaking -- at a massively popular monthly dance party called "The Prince and Michael Experience," hosted by Bomb record label proprietor Dave Paul. The event has become such a hit with audiences that they've had to start it an hour earlier: It will now run from 8 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Madrone Art Bar (500 Divisadero St., San Francisco), $5.
