The story of two late-thirties-early-forties, married-with-children couples – played by Adam Scott, Taylor Schilling, Jason Schwartzman, and Judith Godréche — and their disastrous attempt to socialize is difficult to synopsize without spoilers. Suffice to say that a distinctly kinky vibe asserts itself, and that writer-director Patrick Brice – a former mumblecore cohort of exec-producer Mark Duplass – adds a familiar sense of squirmy self-consciousness to the comic proceedings. Tidy, smart, and calculatedly non-outrageous, The Overnight treats sex as just another problem to deal with in the urban obstacle course – an amusing problem, as it happens. Extra-special perfs by Schilling and Godréche (80 min.).
