The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014: Live Action

Rated NR 2014

It takes live action shorts longer to develop a story line than animations, mostly because they’re more reliant on dialogue. Of the five films in the show, three of them are worth writing home about: Anders Walter’s amiable Swedish tearjerker Helium, in which a terminally ill little boy bonds with a hospital janitor; Xavier Legrand’s Avant que de tout perdre (Just Before Losing Everything), with a battered French mother and her two children running from their abusive husband/father (it’s worth expanding to feature length); and, from Finland, a lighthearted quickie by Selma Vilhunen about an amiably disorganized family scurrying to get ready to attend a wedding, Do I Have to Take Care of Everything? (113 min.).
