The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014: Animated

Rated NR 2014

Five-piece package of Academy nominated short animations achieves bliss with three of them. Best of the lot is Shuhei Morita’s Japanese Possessions, an elegant, spooky tale of a samurai confronted by “living” umbrellas and fabric in a haunted temple one stormy night. Also good are Max Lang and Jan Lachauer’s Room on the Broom from the UK, about a friendly witch who keeps adding “familiars” until her flying broomstick gets overloaded; and writer-director Daniel Sousa’s US production Feral, the story of a wild boy who never quite fits into city life, with wonderfully moody artwork (102 min.).
