The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2012: Live Action

Rated NR 2012

Old Oskar gets a terminal diagnosis from his doctor: six days to live. He decides to spend his remaining time playing his tuba and machine-gunning pesky seagulls, and is joined by Inger, a teenage volunteer "Death Angel" from a Christian group. Norwegian-style laughs ensue in Hallvar Witz's witty dramedy, Tuba Atlantic. Other winners in this five-film roundup: Raju, director Max Zähle's misadventures of a German couple trying to adopt a boy in Kolkata, India; The Shore, a warm drama by writer-director Terry George, about a man (actor Ciarán Hinds) who returns to Northern Ireland to reunite with his estranged adopted brother; and Andrew Bowler's funny screwball sci-fi comedy Time Freak, in which a scientist finds that his time machine creates more problems than it solves. In general, this collection is better than the "Animated" 2012 shorts. (99 min.)
