The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2011: Live Action

Rated NR 2011

This year’s package of Oscar-worthy live-action short films is a bit heavy on violence, both implied and carried out. Pick of the litter is Ivan Goldshmidt’s Belgian-produced Na Wewe, an edgy vignette of civil warfare in Burundi in Central Africa. Then there’s The Confession, by UK filmmaker Tanel Toom, about a nine-year-old boy discovering that the path to sin is surprisingly easy to follow. In Michael Creagh’s The Crush, a smitten Irish schoolboy challenges his teacher’s boyfriend to a duel — with a real revolver. (106 min.)
