Some of the most erotic album covers in the history of music have gone mostly unnoticed. The covers of the Ohio Players albums, best exemplified by Fire almost require an ID to view. Maybe due to those covers, the trail-blazing funk band is often overlooked for its contributions to funk, hip-and rock. Many are familiar with The Red Hot Chili Pepper’s “Roller Coaster of Love” without any idea that it’s a cover from The Ohio Players, or that the opening baseline has been sampled in hip-hop by artist ranging from The Beastie Boys to J-Dilla. After nearly 60 years of iconic sound and innovation, it should go without saying that their music can withstand the test of time. That’s fire.
