The Oakland Underground Film Festival

Wed., Sept. 25 2013
Price: $10/$50
The Oakland Underground Film Festival is a showcase for independent and Do-It-Yourself film, video, and projection-art based in Oakland, California. The Oakland Underground Film Festival places special emphasis on local filmmakers, social justice, urban life, the environment and works of fiction and non-fiction that thrive outside of classic narrative filmmaking. The festival provides first look opportunities at films that entertain, educate, and inspire, by celebrated filmmakers, and emerging artists alike.

The fifth annual Oakland Underground Film Festival brings the most exciting international, local new independent cinema to the East Bay and beyond. Opening night is at the Grand Lake Theater on Wednesday September 25. OAKUFF opens at 8PM with THE PUNK SINGER, a film about Bikini Kill/Le Tigre frontwoman Kathleen Hanna, who helped launch the Riot Grrrl movement, inspired a mainstream grunge rock scene dominated by men, and courageously and emphatically served as the mouthpiece for every girl who thought she could only whisper things in her bedroom. Thursday 9/26 at 8PM OAKUFF hosts a local filmmaker mingle at B-Side BBQ (free!), and the festival continues Friday - Sunday 9/29 at the Humanist Hall with films including DEATH GRIP, a kung fu masterpiece by local film making talent Eric Jacobius; Slamdance hit and award-winning film THE DIRTIES, local phenomenon THE INSTITUTE, a peek into the JeJeune institute invented by Oaklandish co-founder Jeff Hull, and finally the stunning, award-winning film PURGATORIO by local cinematographer Justin Chin and IndieWire favorite director Rodrigo Reyes.

Individual film tickets are $10. Festival passes are available for $50 through September 1 at Brown Paper Tickets. On September 1 at midnight they will be available for $75.
