The Oakland Standard Launch Party

When: Fri., Feb. 4, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. 2011

Less than a year after its dramatic redesign, the "new" Oakland Museum of California (1000 Oak St., Oakland) has more than made good on its mission to highlight the full panoply of Bay Area and California art and culture, past and present. This month, the Museum debuts The Oakland Standard, a series of multidisciplinary "experiments in work and play" funded by the James Irvine Foundation. And from the looks of the launch party on Friday, Feb. 2, it'll give Art Murmur a run for its money: The event starts off with a series of short lectures by speakers including Mary Roach and Novella Carpenter, after which The Turf Feinz and DJ Mia Moretti will do their respective things. A bike valet and good food will also be on hand. 8 p.m., free. 510-238-2200 or MuseumCA.org
