The Notebook

Rated R 110 minutes 2013

One look at the faces of the twelve-year-old twin boys and we’re sure something horrible is about to happen. That something is World War II, a disaster reflected in the lives and misadventures of the wild-eyed Hungarian siblings – played by non-actors and real-life twins László and András Gyémánt – who go to live in the country with their cruel grandmother (scene-stealing Piroská Molnáar) and end up witnessing more than their share of wartime atrocities and wonderments. Director János Szász, adapting Agata Kristof’s novel with Tom Abrams and András Szekér, doesn’t spare the grotesqueries, but somehow we never manage to get past them. These particular children of the damned seem cemented into the landscape (104 min.).
