The Next Three Days

Rated PG-13 133 minutes 2010

Just exactly how does a college lit prof (Russell Crowe) go about springing his wife (Elizabeth Banks), wrongfully convicted of murder, from the county jail in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania? That procedural aspect takes over, quite watchably, in writer-director Paul Haggis’ adaptation of Fred Cavayé’s French crime pic Pour elle – which is thankfully free of any trace of Haggis’ Crash. Has Crowe even been cast as loquacious? Here, he and Banks emerge as reluctant but convincing outlaws, with Lennie James (a cop), Brian Dennehy (Crowe character’s dad), Liam Neeson (a jailbreak expert), Kevin Corrigan (meth lab goon), and Daniel Stern (lawyer) lending immoral support. Capable of producing sweaty palms. (133 min.)
