The Mystery Plays

When: Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Continues through July 5 2008

Not many plays open with veiled references to the DC comics House of Mystery and House of Secrets, but it's not such a stretch for playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, whose day job is writing Marvel comics and scripts for HBO's Big Love. (His plays Say You Love Satan and Based on a Totally True Story have also been staged around the Bay Area in recent years.) The Mystery Plays take a similar approach to those '70s horror anthologies, featuring two interrelated ghost stories ("The Filmmaker's Mystery" and "Ghost Children") introduced by a mystery-man narrator. Two years after the play's West Coast premiere at SF Playhouse, Act Now! stages it for four weekends in Walnut Creek, directed by John Allred. June 13 through July 5 at LesherCenter for the Arts (1345 Locust St., Walnut Creek) or 925-943-7469.
