The Muppets

Rated PG 98 minutes 2011

Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, the Swedish Chef, Animal, and the rest of the original Jim Henson platoon of wise-cracking, furry puppets return from a long hiatus to set out on a mission – rescue the Muppets theater from the clutches of a greedy oil tycoon (Chris Cooper). Little kids and anyone who remembers the Eighties will be suitably wowed. From all appearances they’re traditional-style puppets, not CGI, and the new songs by Bret McKenzie give them plenty to do. Anchoring the human side of the story are Amy Adams (parodying her own sweetness) and Forgetting Sarah Marshall guy Jason Segel (he also co-wrote). Multitudinous cameos by everyone from Mickey Rooney to Ken “Mr. Chow” Jeong. Directed smartly by James Bobin. There’s an extra added attraction in the theaters: Pixar’s Small Fry, a toon short about Buzz Lightyear’s “mini-me,” a frustrated fast-food giveaway toy. (102 min.)
