The Moving Violations

When: Thu., March 13, 7:30 p.m. and Sun., July 13, 6 p.m. 2008

In what has become a seasonal feature at Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley), the Queer Contra Dance invites all ages and genders to join in community dancing. This year's event on Sunday, July 13, will feature New England's popular contra band, Moving Violations, a rollicking group with twin fiddlers, plus Bay Area dance caller Mavis McGaugh. Contra dancing is related to square dancing and other American and English country dance styles, where partners are continually switching. During the three-hour program, each dance set is explained and walked through before the music starts. It's an easy way for beginners to get involved, and the music is rootsy and infectious. 6 p.m., $10. Ashkenaz.com or 510-525-5054.
