The Men Who Stare at Goats

Rated R 2009

George Clooney stars in yet another satire of the military-industrial complex — a slackly written, marginally humorous service comedy about the US Army’s program to train a battalion of psychic-powered “super soldiers” to conquer the oil fields of Iraq. Peter Straughan’s screenplay (adapted from a book and TV show by Jon Ronson) never really gets its hands dirty, despite the presence of Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey, and Ewan McGregor, as fellow “warrior monks” (Bridges and Spacey) and a wide-eyed stateside reporter (McGregor). Final score: Goats 4, Actors 0. Directed by Grant Heslov (93 min.).
