Raquel, the middle-aged, long-time servant of a large, gregarious household in Santiago, Chile, appears to be heading for some sort of breakdown as the film opens. But director and co-writer (with Pedro Peirano) Sebastián Silva makes us wait for the denouement, the better to observe Raquels situation and her interaction with her family and a succession of helper maids. Hats off to veteran actor Catalina Saavedra. She ascends and descends Everests of emotion in the lead role, with wonderful support by Claudia Celedón as the lady of the house and Mariana Loyola as a fellow maid. A triumph of characterization (95 min.).
