Writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos’ dystopian fantasy may seem a tad overly familiar, but the story of a mild-mannered man (Colin Farrell) and his struggles with state-mandated conformity ring more than one bell. Confined in a “hotel” and forced to pair up with a significant other at the risk of being turned into an animal, the adventures of David (Farrell) and the people he meets — played by John C. Reilly, Rachel Weisz, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman, and Jessica Barden, among a strong cast — are told with a flair for dramatic visual compositions and Thimios Bakatikis’ wondrous cinematography. The dour, unsettling beauty is not in the story but in the telling (119 min.).
