The Last Stand

Rated NR 120 minutes 2013

Not content with running on the beach and smoking his cigars, Arnold Schwarzenegger insists on spending his post-governor-of-California days appearing in junk like this. Or maybe we should say “dumb-but-fun” junk. He’s the sheriff in an Arizona border town where an escaped Mexican drug cartel desperado is trying to cross back into Mexico, shooting everyone in his path. Almost everyone. Arnie’s buddy is played by Johnny Knoxville of the Jackass movies and TV shows, which neatly explains the movie’s boundaries. Nevertheless, Korea-to-Hollywood director Kim Jee-woon (I Saw the Devil; The Good, the Bad, the Weird) injects some skillful action into the proceedings. Forrest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Peter Stormare, Luis Guzman, and Jaimie Alexander costar. Screenplay, such as it is, by Andrew Knauer, Jeffrey Nachmanoff, and George Nolfi. (107 min.)
