The Last Lions

Rated PG 88 minutes 2011

Renowned wildlife filmmakers Beverly and Dereck Joubert spent six years shooting this National Geographic documentary, which stresses the rapid decline in the world's lion population. After an African lion is killed by a rival pride, its mate and three cubs flee to an island in a Botswana river delta, where the lioness encounters a large herd of aggressive buffalo, enemies just as deadly. Many of the sequences are intense, like those in which the lioness refines its hunting strategies in unfamiliar territory. But they're undercut by Jeremy Irons's sonorous narration, with its undue emphasis on what "emotions" the big cats are feeling (as if any human could claim to know that). (88 min.)
