The Last Five Years

Rated PG-13 94 minutes 2015

Gimmicky, annoying stage musical adaptation follows the lumpy love affair of an unsuccessful actress (Anna Kendrick) and a successful novelist (Jeremy Jordan) in contemporary Manhattan, with the performers singing their roles in alternating scenes – her side of the story starting with the relationship’s end, going backwards to the beginning; his side more conventionally, from start to finish. His career rises as hers falls, and somehow we don’t really care. Kendrick is the best thing about it, but even her sunny, doll-like persona gets mired down in Jason Robert Brown’s depressing songs and book, adapted for the screen and directed by veteran romance wrangler Richard LaGravenese. If the old-fashioned movie musical form weren’t already dead, this would surely kill it (94 min.).
